Beginning at age three and continuing through middle school, students receive in-depth musical instruction that includes principles of rhythm, melody, harmony and form in the areas of singing, instrument accompaniment, drumming, recorder playing, creative movement and the composer listening program.
Primary students’ curriculum incorporates finger plays, unpitched instrument playing, singing, body percussion, steady beat, tempos and dynamics. Solfege (do, re, mi) is taught to develop sight-singing and notation skills. Elementary and middle school students are trained to play an entire ensemble of Orff instruments, building a foundation for future expertise as individual or ensemble musicians.
All students display their musical abilities by participating in annual performances (winter or spring), with additional opportunities to perform throughout the year in the school choir and annual Broadway play.
